If WordPress isn’t there for some reason, scroll down a little bit on the control panel and click on “Quick Install” under the Software & Services section. Look at the top of the page, in the left sidebar section for WordPress.
The easiest and best way is to ask them for an email address where you can contact them with updates. By collecting your readers’ email addresses from the very beginning of your blog you will build the biggest mailing list possible.
Money. You should not start a blog to make money. We need to get that out of the way first. If your primary objective is to replace your full-time income from blogging, forget about it. It doesn’t work that way. Do you think that Jimi Hendrix picked up his first guitar so he could “supplement his income”? No, he didn’t. Rather, he did it for the love of it, for the joy and fulfillment he received, and the income came thereafter, much later actually.
Jaime, great article that you have posted on how to make money with blogging. Lots of informative concepts which a lot of other blogs would have over complicated but you have made it so simple that I find it so easy to read and take notes. I like it how you have broken it down to steps to follow which is great for the first time blogger just getting started in what appears to be an Internet jungle.
In the end, that’s what I love most about blogging: every article we publish, every course we create, every coaching call we do can change somebody’s life. Maybe not always in a big way, but we touch thousands upon thousands of people, and we make their lives just a little bit better. We inform them, we inspire them, and we give them the roadmap for achieving their dreams.
There are hundreds of different web hosting providers. They all offer you a similar service (domain + hosting) with a similar price, but since I’ve dealt with and monitored many famous and recommended web hosting companies like Bluehost, iPage, Godaddy etc…
Nice guide for making money via blogging. Mostly people use adsense and affiliate networks but sponsored posts are good option too and as you said above declare them as a sponsored post so that everything goes well, i like that part that is good for users and search engines also like that you do advertising but mention it.
Thank you for such a nicely crafted article. I just had one query, Isn’t it true that even in case of paid advertisement people would just visit, read and leave my website rather than visiting again and again over time. What is better, advertising to extract email ids or to build FanPage likes and community
There is a site named Helping Neighbor where you can register to become a Helper, setup your email alerts for the types of jobs you can complete in the areas you prefer so that you can receive paying project requests. Check them out at https://helpingneighbor.com/how-it-works/
Though not a sexy topic, comment moderation is so important when it comes to blogging. With the rise of comment spam, it is important you understand the role you play as a blog owner for wiping that nonsense off your website.
And that’s it! I’m more than confident that your initial blog set up should now be finished and ready to go, and all that should have been really damn easy (unlike my first time, lucky you!). If you are having any problems installing WordPress on iPage then this guide may help.

In 2002 I began to blog one day on impulse after seeing another blog and being fascinated by the medium. I had no idea at the time that what I was doing would ultimately lead to a complete change in my career path and end up being something I’d make a full time income from in several years later.

Affiliate Sales: Instead of getting paid for the link, a better way to arrange payment is via commission. Affiliate marketing is when you link to a product or service from your blog and when one of your readers makes a purchase through your link, the company tracks it and sends you a percentage of the sale.
What a great article. I wonder if you can help me with something I have continually struggled to do. I set up my Facebook blog page some time ago in the same manner as you have suggested. However, my problem is how do you set up a Followers page for the blog profile. It only gives me the option to add a Followers page to my private identity. I am trying to keep my private identity separate to my blog identity but would like to know how many followers I have on my Facebook blog page. Hoping you may have the answer or if not a means of finding the answer. Many thanks. Lesley
Great information and all in one place too! Nowadays I see people are getting very creative in ways to make some extra money from home. I must say, you certainly help to solve this problem very beautifully. Nice guide for making money.
Thanks for stopping by! You are correct – you can “like” your own page, then when something is published there, you can share it on your personal FB profile just like you would with any other post from a page. Hope that helps!
Blog about something with plenty of room for discussion. A blog requires a lot of content to get going and remain interesting. You’ll be at this a long time so make sure you have plenty to talk about.
If you’re not making any money from your blog, it’s hard to stay motivated to continue. The opposite is also true. For instance, how do you think I feel when I see this number pop up on my dashboard every day?
So, I do hope, Bill, that you are in the midst of preparing an inspiring blog full of up-liftment that we can all enjoy. In the meantime, please accept my kind regards and my wishes for your success in the future. Onwards and upwards!
Great question! I suggest you to install WordPress via iPage because if you decide to go self-hosted directly from WordPress.com – it will cost a lot more. That’s the main reason I’m suggest people iPage (to save some money).
Try pixabay.com, they have a good range of freebies to get you going, try also, as a newbie, keyword research, this will be critical to your early success, no matter what you want to talk about, there’s a ton of video’s online, worth investing some time before you get going!
Really excellent article. One suggestion or caution with Godaddy though…Godaddy has a product called WordPress Hosting. I signed up for it, and all was fine until I installed a plugin which had a special requirement that needed to be set up by the webhost. (something in the server side settings). I called Godaddy and they advised they can’t make those changes. Only on their individual hosting plans would that have been possible. This is a rare event, but worth keeping in mind. When you go for your own hosting you have more flexibility.
I can honestly say that without the support and mentoring of the bloggers in my niche, I would never have been able to hit any milestones along the way. It has all been thanks to their kindness and influence.
2. Spam comments – Unfortunately, lots of people want to leave automate spam comments on your blog. They do that for a couple of reasons – to get people from your blog to their blog and to advertise their services/products.
I am just confused about one thing I have been trying to link my blog post which is with wordpresss. Org with my facebook page and it keeps telling me I need to be a developer and then I need to set up an app. I am really confused. I hope you can help.
Hi Karen ,You’ve provided guide to start blogging that helped me in setting up my blog. This guide really proved usefull for me.I’ve been looking for creating blog for me but did’t get good guide .But finally i’m ready with blog that is online now. Thanks here for helping me 🙂
WordPress is free open source software – you are referring to your web hosting company. Web hosts will inform you of any charges in advance and it is very easy to move to a new host. Some web hosts offer free transfers if you sign up for a contract of 12 months or more. The other thing to do to avoid sudden price hikes is pay for 36 months rather than 12.
I have an affiliate question (hopefully you aren’t annoyed at them by now): I want to start a couponing website for a specific niche, that will provide coupons and deals to users at certain stores. What do I do if the store that I really want to promote does not have an affiliate program? Thanks again!
If you’re a total newb to the blog world yourself, what service could you possibly offer someone else? I’m sure I could be a pro hand holder, but the idea of trying to tell someone else how to be successful when *I* don’t even feel like I’m there seems far fetched.
Think about it – what famous, successful blogger you know is using a free blogging website like “startbloggingonline.freeblogs.com” instead of their own domain name like “StartBloggingOnline.com”, for example?
Sitting still for long periods of time is a lot worse for your health than first thought. In fact, researchers are now showing that sitting still can lead to early death as well as a whole host of bad diseases.
Add Value. Your blog must add value to its readers’ lives. This is the only way you will get Great Quality Readers to your site (and keep them coming back). Adding value is the only way to get someone’s long-term buy-in. We both learned this after a decade of leading and managing people in the corporate world.
Within a month, I had On Moneymaking off the ground, and within two months, it was getting 2,000 visitors a day and Performancing nominated it for the best business/money blog of the year. A couple of months after that, Brian Clark asked me to become the Associate Editor of Copyblogger, and so I sold On Moneymaking for five figures and went to work at one of the most popular blogs at the world.
Premium domains usually start at $1,000+, but some change hands for $100,000s or even millions of dollars. Before you fall in love with your dream domain name (and have to remortgage the house), you have been warned!
For example over the past couple of years, husband and wife team, Bjork and Lindsay at PinchofYum.com, a food and recipe blog, have built up a huge following and some months they have made nearly $25k.
For me this  affordable course from Michelle Schroeder-Gardner is the only thing your will need to truly understand the art of making money through blogging. It will show you how you can get up and running extremely quickly and with no affiliate marketing experience needed.
I’m impressed about the depth of insight you seem to command in this area. It is true there are lots of sites that means opposite of what they say or write but yours is different. Keep on doing a good job out there.
I tell new bloggers to allow 3-6 months to make a decent part-time income and 1-2 years to make a consistent full-time income. There are always exceptions of course, but after being active in the blogging world for almost 14 years, these are reasonable averages.
While you’re more than welcome to write about your every whim and opinion, blogs that focus on a particular niche often perform better in terms of traffic and money-making potential. So think about your passions, your business, your experience or your goals.
I find this website useful however, I also find it bias towards WordPress. Like at the top of the page list the blogging pros for each then the cons NOT WORDPRESS so they suck. Am I the only one who got that vibe? Guess I will keep poking around. Thank you xx
Domain name – This will be your personal blog address where people find you over and over again. For example, Google’s Domain is www.Google.com. Your new blog domain name will be www.YourBlogName.com, except you’ll choose what’s going to be behind YourNewBlog. The cost of a domain name is usually $10/year, but if you follow this guide all the way, I’ll show you how to get one for much cheaper.
To get started, it’s a good idea to put together a one-page media kit that details your traffic stats, social media following, audience demographics, and any other data that will make your site more appealing to advertisers. Then, you can approach companies to negotiate a sponsorship deal.
Tumblr is a little different than other blogging platforms. It is a microblogging platform with social networking features including following other blogs, reblogging, built-in sharing tools, and more.
