This is a really interesting post Jon. What you’ve listed here are the “tools of the trade” so to speak. Every type of business has a list of things specific to that business that must happen in order for their to be income produced. If that list isn’t followed, then you have a hobby, not a business.

Premium domains usually start at $1,000+, but some change hands for $100,000s or even millions of dollars. Before you fall in love with your dream domain name (and have to remortgage the house), you have been warned!
2. You can migrate to a self hosted blog later on but if you don’t have your own custom domain name then you’ll lose the traffic you have built up. A domain name is going to cost you $15 from WordPress.com whilst a domain name + 1 years hosting at iPage is around $27 for the sake of around $12 I think it makes sense to start off totally in control.

I mean, of course I’d come up with suitable content for Forbes should they wish to publish me, haha, but honestly we’d be happy with guest posting on even mildly popular travel blogs. The problem up to now, as I mentioned above, is that nobody wants to let us guest post, they want us to pay to do a sponsored post since our blog is attached to our business. If my blog was MexicoMike.com instead of http://blog.geckorockresort.com/ then it wouldn’t be an issue, but as soon as anyone sees the name of our business they incorrectly assume we’re loaded 🙂
Try this – “like” the page from your personal profile, then log in as the fan page and view your likes. You can add your personal account as an admin for the page. Once you do that, you can log in from your personal profile and remove the other identity as a page admin. Hopefully that makes sense. Is a fan page the same as a facebook page? And so I just follow the steps you stated in your article and create my page. I did my page with my facebook profile and got nervous so I created a knew facebook acct I will use for my blog

A blog can give you an income from offline sources and is a great way of diversifying into different areas, but again it also depends on the niche you find yourself in. I always say to people to not be too reliant on one source of traffic or one source of income, because they can vanish pretty quickly.
Linking to other websites is a great way to make friends and provide value to your readers. It shows that you know your stuff and are not afraid to mention the “competition”. However, every time I want to include a link, Yoast says: “you’re about to link to a website that’s ranking for the same keyword you want to, are you sure you want to do that?”
I blog anonymously and chose to create a separate Facebook to host my fan page.  I still haven’t been able to successfully post directly from my blog to my fan page instead of the update ending up on my dummy Facebook persona (though I also haven’t tackled it lately), so I made the right choice for the moment.  Speaking of which, any tips on that?

I’ve read that free themes aren’t really a good way to go because you don’t get updates or support and they can contain malicious code, so I was just wondering what your experience is with themes.
