This is very useful information for me as a beginner blogger. I figured to try blogging as a project while working on my MBA program online this year. I haven’t finished publishing my blog site yet. Still checking out some tips and advice prior to publishing. A bit nervous but after reading other new bloggers helps build my confidence. Hopefully I get the nerves to publish by end of January. As you mentioned, I ended up using WordPress.
If you’re a total newb to the blog world yourself, what service could you possibly offer someone else? I’m sure I could be a pro hand holder, but the idea of trying to tell someone else how to be successful when *I* don’t even feel like I’m there seems far fetched.
Just read all the comments from the beginning. Thanks. I’m thinking to add a Fan page for my new blog. Two questions: 1) I already have a Fan page for artwork that I post. Am I allowed to have another one for my blog, according to FB? 2) What about recent changes where it seems FB is making it harder to have your Fan page show up without ‘boosting’ it with ads….do you have advice on how to handle this (which I don’t think was the case when you first posted the cool directions for setting up a Fan page in 2012). Thanks for any help.
you changed your domain name and you are doing well but i did the same but things are bad (no traffic, back links, mass email not working). I have just read your advice on domain change in one of your posts but now what should i do.
I agree about foregoing ads and instead selling your own products in those ad spaces. This might however not be applicable to bloggers who are still new and running the ropes, and to blogs that are still in their growth phase.
Tumblr is a little different than other blogging platforms. It is a microblogging platform with social networking features including following other blogs, reblogging, built-in sharing tools, and more.
On the positive side, a quick search might show you where your competition is getting its links from and that can mean you can replicate them yourself or come up with your own similar promotional strategies. Clever!
Ramsay, top post, I really like updating old posts and bringing them back to life. It just shows the importance of caring for your blog visitors and giving them accurate picture every time they visit. just shared it on FB, Tw.,FB and LI.
That said, don’t feel like every post needs to be an essay. Online readers generally scan content, so as long as you’re formatting your posts so they’re easy to read, write as much or as little as you like.
In short, a blog is a type of website that focuses mainly on written content, also known as blog posts. In popular culture we most often hear about news blogs or celebrity blog sites, but as you’ll see in this guide, you can start a successful blog on just about any topic imaginable.
my blog is 9 months old, I’ve done many things to get it going, but still, gets only about 10 visits per day. I’m not sure what is the problem. It’s not very niche focused, it’s broadly in the “education” and “life-hacks” niche maybe, I recognize that may be a problem, but is it so fatal? Or it takes more time?
A google search will show you what is available. Some hosting companies also proveide spam and hacking prevention services for an additional fee so you should contact your host. There are spam filters you can use.
Hi Jessica, thanks for the advice! I have been setting up my blog over the last few days and written a few posts already. I’m really nervous to launch the site though so as of now only I have access to my blog. Did you wait until you had a good amount of material on your blog before publicizing it or did you start with one article and got more traffic as more material was added? Thanks!
Is a fan page the same as a facebook page? And so I just follow the steps you stated in your article and create my page. I did my page with my facebook profile and got nervous so I created a knew facebook acct I will use for my blog
My name is Scott Chow, and I am going to be your guide on this journey to building a successful blog. I have been building blogs and websites since 2002. In that time I have launched several of my own blogs, and helped hundreds of others do the same.
For instance, our $10,000 product is a year-long coaching program for bloggers — a group that’s not exactly known for their wealth, but I always fill all ten spots within minutes of opening the program. Here’s why: the last time we opened it, I notified 40,000 bloggers. 2% of 40,000 writers is 800 people. By only accepting 10, I’m creating a situation of extreme scarcity.
Regarding BSA, I monetize my site with BSA, the site gets around 50k impressions per month, advertising on there I’ve found not to be economical for a blog as the CTR’s are so low, but definitely good for ecommerce sites.
Great post, thanks for sharing. Couldn’t agree more as Blue Host with WordPress Blogging is an Excellent way to generate a Passive Income Online. Love the use of Plugins with WordPress, makes Search Engine Optimization SO Much Easier.
If you’re not interested in selling ads or sponsored posts, there are plenty of other ways you can earn money online from your blog. A popular method is by having your audience pay to access certain content or areas of your site. Here are a couple of ways to do that.
I learned this lesson the hard way after having most of my income coming from one source in the early days but after a bit of a bad experience began to diversify my income streams (read about that here) – it was one of the best things I ever did!
Hi, I am setting up a business Facebook page, but I want to put in my own category, as none of the options on the scroll down list is appropriate. I did put in the most relevant to get myself started, but now can’t find a way to put in what I actually want.
Also, I’m skipping a lot of other important topics like price testing, competition, economics, and lots of other variables that affect how to make money blogging, but in my opinion, none of those things are even worth considering until you know the answer to this one simple question:
Hi Jessica, this article gives me hope that I can start a blog. I’ve started the biggest journey of my life of taking my health back. I felt it would be great to track all of this with pictures, videos and articles.
I know that starting a blog can seem overwhelming and intimidating. My free guide was designed just for beginners, and requires only the most basic computer skills. So whether you’re 8 or 88, you can have your blog ready to go in less than 20 minutes.
Ghost is a minimalist blogging platform with limited features focused on writing blog posts. It’s available as a hosted platform, and also as a software that you can install and host yourself. We’ll take a look at both options.
Good info Word of warning though if your website is not very niche you can forget about Google Adsense. I have a generic business directory and 30,000 monthly visits over 3 months Google Adsense payout? Zero!!!!!!
Cross promote on other YouTube channels and relevant websites. Reach out and get in touch with some of your favorite bloggers and vloggers. Try and collaborate with them by cross marketing each others content. You could add them to your “Featured channels” list and they will become one of the “suggested channels” to your subscribers.
If you don’t remember your login info, find the welcome emails sent to you after you set up your site initially. Look in your spam folder if you don’t see them immediately. Those emails have two sets of login information:
You’ll get your first month free, and then you’ll pay $19 a month for up to 500 subscribers, with additional charges as your list grows. AWeber is a bigger investment, but offers all sorts of creative options like autoresponders, lots of testing methods and beautiful templates.
Thanks for the great guide! I really like your posts! The one question that I have, is what does it mean to install WP? Is it actually installing a system on your computer? Or is it just integrating Hostgator in to WP?
Here at Smart Blogger, we strive for one dollar per subscriber per month in sales, and I think that’s a good place to start when you’re a beginner too. In other words, an email list of 1,000 subscribers should result in at least $1,000 per month in sales, 10,000 subscribers would result in $10,000 per month in sales, and so on.
Jon Morrow is the gold standard in this arena, and this post encapsulates that. He consulted with me at the launch of my blog, and these 20 principles feel like evolutions of that great advice. My numbers are nowhere near his (frankly, my subscriber list seems fixed lately), but my experience validates the core of what’s here: it’s all about consulting, leading to products (in my case, a bit of the other way around, via a book that arose from my website/blog). If you can afford Jon (I can’t), go for it… provided you truly are an “expert” in a given field, one that other people will pay to listen to. If you can’t, or aren’t (at least yet), just read everything he’s written, here and elsewhere.
I love reading comprehensive posts, especially those that distill what the blogger has learned themselves over the years. Helps know what works and what does not, so I don’t waste time and hopes on something that’s less likely to help meet my blogging goals. Thank you for this.
It’s faster. Instead of investing months or even years creating a product, all you have to do is publish a link on your site. Assuming your audience is engaged, you could be earning commissions within hours or even minutes.
Sitting still for long periods of time is a lot worse for your health than first thought. In fact, researchers are now showing that sitting still can lead to early death as well as a whole host of bad diseases.
Man 100k per month from just a single blog is absolutely Awesome. You are really an All-In-One Internet guider. I am starting out with my new blog, we are at setup stage, we are preparing free courses for email optins.
Thanks for a great post. I have printed it out as I always like to read my inspirational stuff again and again. I am thinking of teaching a creative writing course to senior school kids, because in my country(South Africa) job opportunities are scarce and education expensive. I want to teach young people that you can create your own opportunities through writing and growing to be an expert in a chosen field. This way they will also improve their confidence in approaching opportunities when it do arise and with the right attitude. I am a real estate professional and writes a blog on aspects which I have noticed my clients are ignorant about. My readership has risen through the year and all my sales last year came from readers of my blog. Thanks again for the information you present so well and with a sense of humour. I still cannot afford one of your courses but I read every one and apply all that I learn. Praise be to Your Royal Awesomeness!
The top partner has the first shot to fill an ad – if they don’t – they “pass back” that ad request to Adsense (since Adsense is a 100% fill solution but tends to have lower CPMs than other ad networks).
Thanks so much Jon. I have been struggling to ‘get off the ground’ and am devouring your insight and knowledge. You offer such invaluable and proven information and are totally inspiring. I know I CAN DO THIS and will continue to soak up your posts as they come through. I won’t wast too much time now on Facebook and Twitter which I’ve been trying to get my head around. You see I am very new to everything!
Informational. News, content curation and other information. Product review videos are very popular. For example videos where people are filmed taking products out of the box. Similar with “haul” videos where people show what products they have bought in shops.
As the majority of them are not full time bloggers, every hour more spent on the designing of the blog means one hour less for creating the content. And, using the chess terminology, if the content is king (and quality backlinks queen), the blog design is only bishop.
I may not personally know you (yet lol) but let me give you the 2 thumbs up for your achievement and thanks for showing others that their goals are also achievable ($100k a month is a goal for a lot of us Internet marketers)!
My understanding is that you have to subscribe/pay for the business version of Word Press in order to use any of the monetizing functions. I think you should clearly state this in this article at the beginning. I think there is a degree of bait and switch here if people are just signing up for the free subscription and then finding out they have to pay for a subscription to make money. I am ok with that, it just needs to be stated up front everywhere.
