First, start a blog if you haven’t already. Next, focus on building up a solid library of at least 10-20 blog posts. Make sure they are helpful and meaty. Figure out which income streams are natural extensions of your posts. In the meantime, build relationships on social media, in Facebook Groups and wherever your potential readers hang out. Don’t just promote your own stuff, but be a helpful part of the conversation. People will eventually check out what you have to offer.

When to Post. Question: When is the best day and time to publish a blog post? Answer: It doesn’t really matter. We don’t adhere to a particular schedule. Some weeks we post one essay; sometimes we post three. Yes, it is important to write consistently, but you needn’t get too bogged down in the details.
I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around this one. I was blown away that you don’t have ads on your site. I have ads on my site and I’m reading along thinking your advice is to forget the ads and sell products. As a food blogger, my mind goes to e-cookbooks, actual hold-in-your-hand cookbooks, books on how to start a food blog and how to do food photography. But according to this post, those I should sell later…the cheaper products. I can’t think of what “services” I could offer, other than offering to come over and cook for them (not happening) and I’m not quite an expert at offering services of personally coaching someone’s food blog. Maybe I’m just too green for that 🙂 Am I missing the point?
Visual content has been growing for years and it appears to be speeding up, not slowing down. We now have retina display tablets and our smartphones are getting bigger. Social networking sites like Facebook are favoring images and videos over text – never mind sites like Pinterest which are totally based around photos! If you’re not working with visual content yet it’s time to start.
I’m the same, I’ve never paid for links and concentrate on on site SEO and although it takes more time it is now really paying off. I’ve now got over 50 number one positions in Google and my traffic has doubled in the last year.
Again great post man, another little top for people who’re thinking of paid advertising. Always make sure your ad is between posts or in article itself. Do not ever buy top or side ads, people are blind to them. Nobody clicks them.
Modify Your Blog. Once we had our domain, hosting, WordPress, and theme, we spent a lot of time tweaking the theme to get the look and feel we wanted (i.e., making our vision a reality). Then we spent even more time tinkering with the theme and arguing about it and tweaking it some more. Once we had created our blog, we set up a free Feedburner account so people could subscribe to our site via email and RSS subscriptions. And then we established a free Google Analytics account to track our stats. Feedburner and Google Analytics were both easy to sign up for, and we still use both today.
There’s a rumor floating around that I’ve made each of those mistakes on multiple occasions. Some people also say I have to be repeatedly reminded about the graph above, lest I slip up and nearly bankrupt the company (again).
The point is, most people are afraid to charge more than $200 for a class, believing that’s all people can afford, but it’s just not true. Every market has customers who are and willing to pay for a premium experience. Give them one.
With paid methods, you have the opportunity to pay for traffic and clicks right away. And if you do well in targeting your audience on the right channels you can easily build your audience with advertising to supplement your organic efforts.

I feel really fortunate to get that attention, but also kind of know that if I’d just written a little 500-word update on the topic nothing would have happened. The whole thing would have fizzled out. Unfortunately, that is what happens to a lot of bloggers.
You’ve got my attention & gratitude. Just launched a new chalk enhanced paint line, know I want and need to start a blog and get engaged on my Facebook and website. But dare I say, it’s all a bit scary & daunting. New to you and look forward to figuring out where to even begin.
For instance, I somewhat lack at points 3 (I still haven’t given the mailing list the attention is deserves), 7 (I’m bad at networking and telling people “Hey! I’ve linked to you,” usually), 11 (praying for my health *sobs*), 13 (this is something I’ve myself figured out in the long term. I need to stand out).
Great post, do you have more advice on paid advertising spend for blogs? I have a blog getting decent traffic however I would like to expedite that a bit with a bit of paid advertising. I’ve ventured a bit into facebook ads but am looking for other channels to promote as well. Any advice would be appreciated so I can expand my readership.

Just read all the comments from the beginning. Thanks. I’m thinking to add a Fan page for my new blog. Two questions: 1) I already have a Fan page for artwork that I post. Am I allowed to have another one for my blog, according to FB? 2) What about recent changes where it seems FB is making it harder to have your Fan page show up without ‘boosting’ it with ads….do you have advice on how to handle this (which I don’t think was the case when you first posted the cool directions for setting up a Fan page in 2012). Thanks for any help.

These are some of the best I have read in a while Jon. Well, am a blogger in a relatively different online environment – Africa to be precise. Some things just don’t work out over here – ebooks no one buys them, mailing lists, no one joins them and very few people are willing to pay you to teach them anything. Hopefully, over time I will find the right formula to bissect this difficult market.

Don’t get me wrong I have made many mistakes along the way but once I knew what I was doing it became a lot easier and more enjoyable. Many of my friends have emailed me or called me to find out more about “What Jamie Does”, but it can be a little hard to sink in at first as to how you can actually make a real income from running a successful blog(s). Therefore I have decided to create this guide for my friends, family, email subscribers and anyone else who wants to start doing “What Jamie Does”.
How much time do you have to blog? You may want to start off with 2 – 3 articles per week. You just don’t want to do too much and become overwhelmed by the amount you are doing. As for length of post, 500+ words since you don’t want your blog to appear to be spammy. In fact you want to create value.
Just thinking aloud here – but maybe you could put a guide together to help people choose the best art for their homes? Maybe in time offer a consultancy service – I bet there are some people who would pay someone to choose the art for them? I’ve seen that you are a self-taught artist – able to offer courses/consultancy on helping others learn art?
