My hurdle that you make seem so easy comes for this one line: “Write content that gets lots of traffic”. I know that I write good content, but content that gets lots of traffic … well. In that one line you have made the most difficult part of getting started seem like a “no brainer”.
I did not make any money from my first blogs for almost 18 months (I didn’t even know you could so did not try) and when I did start to try to make money from them the first income was just a few dollars a week – but gradually in time my income grew from a part time income to a full time income and then beyond.
We believe that WordPress outperforms all other platforms. It is powerful, easy to use, affordable, and the most flexible of all available blogging platforms. Here are all the reasons why you should use WordPress.
Selling services first and then creating a product is an amazing idea which I never read before. I can enumerate several others from your post but don’t want to repeat all the points you mentioned. It will be just like the reproduction of whole post.
Once you find a theme you like, you can preview it with your content. If you don’t have any website content or the plugins necessary for the theme, this preview might not look like anything like the final product.
But if you blog daily and feature a combination of advertisements, affiliate offers and your own products, you might be able to make a full-time living from your blog. Let’s break down how most bloggers — including me — make money online.
Thanks for the great guide! I really like your posts! The one question that I have, is what does it mean to install WP? Is it actually installing a system on your computer? Or is it just integrating Hostgator in to WP?
Once you’ve created a blogging website with WordPress (more on this later), it’s simple to update it with new content. You can write blog posts directly into the text field in your WordPress dashboard, or you can write them in your favorite word processor and just paste your content into WordPress. You’ll be able to format your posts and add images, as well as various other interesting features.
I think it was perhaps this article from Sydney about a study of 220,000 Australian residents who sat still for long periods. There have been a few follow up studies since that freaked me out, especially because it says exercise doesn’t undo all the bad blogging vibes!
Perhaps I should mention that I’d like my blogs to be funny and uplifting, just so you now where I’m aiming, I suppose. Sadly, I don’t feel that I have an expertise to offer anyone in any particular field. All I’ve got are my own life lessons and sense of humor. 🙂
Ignore Negative Criticism and Stupidity. Sure, we get a lot of negative comments and stupid questions from ignorant people who aren’t really our readers (e.g., negative comments like “You’re not real minimalists” and stupid questions like “Are you guys gay?”). We call these people seagulls: they fly in, crap on your site, and fly away. But we pay them no mind, because we didn’t start our blog for them. Delete their comment and move on.
In regards to the fractions of seconds; it actually makes a huge difference. Studies by Amazon, Yahoo and a bunch of others have showed that increments of as small as 0.2 of a second can decrease sales by up to 7%.
It will also give you the funds you need to build a team around you. You can hire an assistant, a tech person, a billing person. The faster you get rid of stuff you suck at doing, the faster you will grow.

Just make sure if your aim is to build a huge following, sell online, or monetize your blog in any way, you research the niches that are competitive enough to generate revenue but aren’t so oversaturated it’s nearly impossible to break into the niche and make money.
really great article, thanks Jon. I particularly like #1 – it’s the mindset shift that we all need to step up and “play” at the level to generate substantial revenue. Reversing the sales funnel is also very smart and makes a lot of sense. It’s easier to make one $3,000 sale than making 300 $10 sale – although putting a $10 product out there is less scary than selling a $3000 service – again, it’s all about the mindset.
Transparency. Being transparent is different from being honest. You needn’t share every detail about your life just for the sake of being honest. Always be honest, and be transparent when it adds value to what you’re writing. (You won’t ever see pictures of us using the restroom on our site, because that’s just not relevant.)
I am ready to take the challenge for 2018. Although I choose spiritual niche, it may not earn much as compared to finance but that’s what am perfect at writing, religious blogs. I hope these strategies will work well for me.
Hi Andrea great information very helpful best that I can find. I was wondering if you can help me I am trying to use a plugin for facebook and my wordpress.org to feed my posts from my blog to my facebook page and they keep telling me I need to be a developer. So I signed up to be a developer and it’s so confusing is there any way around this developer thing. I still can’t figure it out I just want my blogs to feed into my facebook page.
I feel really fortunate to get that attention, but also kind of know that if I’d just written a little 500-word update on the topic nothing would have happened. The whole thing would have fizzled out. Unfortunately, that is what happens to a lot of bloggers.
Nevertheless, are these instructions still relevant today in that I need to set up a personal ‘profile’ and then create a ‘fan’ page? As I understand it also, to keep them ‘separate’, I should avoid ‘liking’ from one to the other.
Reminder: TheMinimalists.com is a Bluehost affiliate partner, which means that in addition to using their service, we also receive a referral credit for referring new customers. To be fair, though, we would still use Bluehost even if we weren’t an affiliate. Ergo, we don’t recommend Bluehost just because we’re an affiliate (every hosting company offers a similar affiliate program); we recommend Bluehost because they are the best, most reliable option. Plus, because we’re a partner, Bluehost offers a special price for The Minimalists‘ readers: only $2.95 a month. That’s a phenomenal price.
WordPress.org. WordPress.org websites are free to set up, though they require the purchase of a domain name and are self-hosted, meaning you need to invest in WordPress hosting to store your site’s data for you. And, while there are hundreds of WordPress hosting providers to choose from, if you take the time to do your research, you’ll find the one that works best for you. Lastly, there are thousands of free and premium plugins and themes available to extend the design and functionality of your blog.
Hi Gemma, Having 10 visitors per day to a new site is great. The numbers will grow as you start building more pages. If you are concerned about visitors and want to attract more, check out the post I wrote on promoting your blog: https://startbloggingonline.com/how-to-promote-your-blog-and-get-visitors/
Say what it is you have to say and then stop filming. People have an incredibly short attention span. The second you find yourself starting to ramble, end the clip. A great vlog is usually only a couple of minutes long.
Heres my suggestion: Before you start a blog, make sure you have some ideas what to write about. If you dont have any think about your hobbies or things youre passionate about. This helped me to find my niche/topic for my blog.
Ramsay, top post, I really like updating old posts and bringing them back to life. It just shows the importance of caring for your blog visitors and giving them accurate picture every time they visit. just shared it on FB, Tw.,FB and LI.
To start with, you will need to login to your blog. Go to http://www.yourblog.com/wp-admin to bring up the login screen (replace “yourblog.com” with your domain name). If you are unsure of your login name or password, check the email that was sent to you from BlueHost that has this information.
