Don’t expect it to come quickly. I have worked pretty tirelessly on my blog and genuinely love blogging, but realistically, only make 20-25% of my income from blogging (13 months later). It takes time and an awful lot of work. Don’t feel bad if it takes a year or two to start seeing any momentum.
That’s easier said than done, but here are some easy tricks to get your ideas flowing. Write down whatever comes to mind as a potential post, and then go through your list anytime you need inspiration.
Tumblr is a little different than other blogging platforms. It is a microblogging platform with social networking features including following other blogs, reblogging, built-in sharing tools, and more.
That’s why I’ve put this page together for you, to give beginners a fast, foolproof guide to starting a blog, without having to learn HTML or waste your time reading long, boring tutorials. In fact, over 9,500 people have already setup blogs using this guide!
For instance, we have a guest blogging course that retails for $497. In exchange, we promise to help students get featured on a big blog or magazine like The Huffington Post or Forbes. I think it’s fair to say that exposure is worth $5,000 to the right person. So, the product sells easily and well.
WordPress.com. WordPress.com is a free blogging platform that is hosted by WordPress itself. There is no software to download, you don’t need a web host to store your data for you, and there is no need to maintain a web server. Plus, you don’t need to pay for a domain name. There are built-in customization options for making changes to your blog as you see fit, though the design and functionality of your blog is limited.
WordPress.org software is free, but you’ll need to buy a domain name (about $14.99/year) and hosting (usually starting from $7.99/month). However, WPBeginner users can get started for only $2.75 per month with Bluehost, an official WordPress recommended hosting provider. They are offering our users 60% off on hosting and a FREE domain name.
Solid numbers about blogging incomes are hard to come by. For example, in the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics lump bloggers in the very broad category of “Writers and Authors” which has a median income of $61,240 per year. It’s not an accurate measure since there are vastly different occupations included in that category. Information from small surveys and anecdotal evidence can also be found online, but much of it is outdated or taken from tiny sample sizes.
In WordPress, blog layouts are known as “Themes”. What is a blog theme? Themes control the entire design of your blog. To change your theme you are going to click on the “Appearance” tab on the left menu.
It seems we are at the same juncture for professional blogging. It strikes me as a positioning opportunity for professional blogging. You have generously done as much or more than anyone I know to move the profession forward. I want to be part of that process. Perhaps, destiny calls.
WordPress also have a variety of plugins that make it easy to put social sharing buttons on your blog posts. Some people like to limit the number of plugins they use on their WordPress blog because it can slow the blog down and it can open your blog up to more attacks, butt a social sharing plugin is one that should have high priority if you do choose to use plugins.
Once completed, you will receive an email with details on how to login to your web hosting control panel (cPanel). This is where you manage everything from support, emails, among other things. But most importantly, this is where you install WordPress.
The process is easy to follow whether you are 20 years old or 60 years old. However if you need help, our expert team will help you setup your blog for free. → Click Here to Get Your Free WordPress Blog Setup! ←
I’ve been searching online to find out how can I turn my business fan page into my main feed page so my main page is not getting all the post that I post for my business page I don’t want to irritate.
If you’re not making any money from your blog, it’s hard to stay motivated to continue. The opposite is also true. For instance, how do you think I feel when I see this number pop up on my dashboard every day?
How much time do you have to blog? You may want to start off with 2 – 3 articles per week. You just don’t want to do too much and become overwhelmed by the amount you are doing. As for length of post, 500+ words since you don’t want your blog to appear to be spammy. In fact you want to create value.
Great article I’ve been a plumber for over 25 years and was thinking of starting a plumbing blog withe free help and advice do you think this blog could make money and would it be difficult to set up ?
Good info Word of warning though if your website is not very niche you can forget about Google Adsense. I have a generic business directory and 30,000 monthly visits over 3 months Google Adsense payout? Zero!!!!!!
Still, directly selling ads takes more work to manage than using Google AdSense. Instead of just adding a bit of code to your website, you’ll have to negotiate pricing, come up with an agreement and terms, and take care of administrative work like invoicing.
Hi Danielle. It looks like Facebook has removed the more detailed categories from the pages since this post was written – I just set up a test page and I don’t see the page type listed anywhere. You can choose the broad category “website” when setting up your page as mentioned above in the post, though.
Indeed an amazing post, well no doubt WordPress is spectacular Content Management System. Which help us to create stunning websites and blog instantly. Your step by step guidance make it easy for every one to go through.
I want to make a personal blog type of fan page but the selection of what kind of page I want to make has nothing to do with it. Only business things. How can I put the page to say personal blog. Not the name of the page but the discription of it.
Jon, amazing article! I would just add to your #15 regarding e-mail subscribers. The number you described is real if you have a legit database of subscribers behind it (don’t know if you take this here for granted).

Money. You should not start a blog to make money. We need to get that out of the way first. If your primary objective is to replace your full-time income from blogging, forget about it. It doesn’t work that way. Do you think that Jimi Hendrix picked up his first guitar so he could “supplement his income”? No, he didn’t. Rather, he did it for the love of it, for the joy and fulfillment he received, and the income came thereafter, much later actually.
Many bloggers create and sell their own digital products. Digital products are great because they don’t require inventory and can be distributed to quickly and easily. There’s no overhead and low risk. Examples of digital products bloggers create:
Plugins. We use only a few plugins on our site: “Google Analytics for WordPress” and really simple Facebook and Twitter share-button plugins (since human beings are intrinsically wired to share value, it’s important to make your posts easy to share with others). They take just a few seconds (literally a few seconds, it’s just a click of a button) to install once you’ve started your blog. And if you really want to play around with some cool plugins, check out WPBeginner’s Best WordPress Plugins.
This is absolutely fantastic stuff and a real eye opener for business like mine, where we want technology to be our main driver given today’s day and age. I really appreciate the honest insights that you’ve put forward, and we will look forward to always learning more about the business through your posts and will definitely spread the good news.
I don’t know many bloggers who earn money from their blog alone. By that, I’m referencing mainly to my previous point about thinking bigger than your blog. Most bloggers don’t earn a living just from selling sidebar ads and writing one post everyday. A Beautiful Mess sells books and e-courses. Designlovefest teaches Blogshop, a popular Photoshop workshop for bloggers. Oh Joy! just created a line of products for Target. These are some of the biggest bloggers I know of, yet they are constantly innovating and thinking of new ways to use their blog as a creative starting point and marketing tool. Be an innovator. Branch out.
My name is Scott Chow, and I am going to be your guide on this journey to building a successful blog. I have been building blogs and websites since 2002. In that time I have launched several of my own blogs, and helped hundreds of others do the same.
The best thing I ever did to get traffic was to promote my early blog posts on social media (Twitter/Facebook) and forums I was a member of… Once your blog has been around a few months you will start to see some trickles of traffic from search engines.
Hi Jess, I already own a free hosted blog on wordpress because as a student I don’t really have enough money to get self hosting due to the yearly payment. right now I can’t activate Adsense and it’s being restrictive. please do you think ipage is cheaper and is it monthly payment.
During that time, I started four different blogs, working on them at night and on the weekends. The first three failed. Despite investing hundreds of hours into each one, I made too many mistakes, and I eventually had to shut the blogs down. I didn’t earn a penny from them.
I also love the fact that someone other than myself has picked up on the images. I always use fiverr and pay an illustrator 5 bucks for maybe 5 images to illustrate my blog posts. It not only gives a far more unique look – you know that people will subconsciously understand that the article they have just read is of higher quality than most.
Blogs consist of a pretty similar structure, no matter what they are about. For example, they typically have a homepage that tells people what they can expect to learn from you once they begin reading your content.
In our opinion, WordPress.com is the only show in town. Sure, there are plenty of other services, like Google’s Blogger.com or Yahoo’s Tumblr. But they’re severely limited next to WordPress for a free blog service.
Congratulations! A very interesting post. I am agree with almost everything you say. Only could add, that more beauty shall be required in internet. Most of the blogs are without design, and maybe it could be the Play for artists. Thanks
Within a month, I had On Moneymaking off the ground, and within two months, it was getting 2,000 visitors a day and Performancing nominated it for the best business/money blog of the year. A couple of months after that, Brian Clark asked me to become the Associate Editor of Copyblogger, and so I sold On Moneymaking for five figures and went to work at one of the most popular blogs at the world.
I first learned about blogging back in college when I was lucky enough to sell a couple for 5-figures. Since then I’ve been so fortunate to work full time from my couch! I honestly don’t say this to brag, but just to show you how powerful blogs can be for changing your career or revitalizing your existing business.
Edge on the side of caution. Although putting a link on your site to another site for money is not illegal, it is against Google’s guidelines, as the person wanting the link is trying to manipulate the SERPs for their own gain.
